I can remember my first day in the US like it was yesterday, I felt all sorts of emotions. I was happy, excited, nervous, scared etc. I was ready to start this new chapter of my life, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of my life.
I attended Altoona High school. School here felt more enjoyable, exciting and simpler than it is at home. I like the environment at AHS because I was able to move from class to class and interact with many different people throughout the school day. I made many different friends this way, who will always be part of my life.
In fall I got a chance to be a part of the Altoona Tennis team. When winter came around, I became the manager for the Altoona girls Basketball team. I went to every game and practice, providing support for the girls and encouraging them on the bench. I have gotten really close with the girls involved on both the tennis and basketball teams and I'm grateful for the opportunity.
I got very lucky with my host family, there were five family members and one dog. Nick (Host Dad), Shalyn (Host Mom) and my host siblings, Maddie (2006), Lily (2008) and Liam (2012). My host family treated me like one of their own and were very welcoming to me. I shared a room with my host sister Maddie, I had a comfortable bed, lounge couch, and TV. My family gave me the opportunity to experience traditions and to go on trips. I had my first American Christmas and Thanksgiving. I had never celebrated Thanksgiving before and was very excited to experience new things.
The highlight of my holiday was go to Chicago, Illinois. I got to see all of the main attractions, such as the tallest tower in the city (Willis Tower) and the famous Bean structure. I was also fortunate enough to visit NYC. I saw many exciting sights, such as the Statue of Liberty. I went to Central Park, Time Square and to the top of the Empire State Building. I feel very grateful that I had an opportunity to travel as much as I did. I was also privileged to see a lot of the Midwest as well.
For all future exchange students out there, enjoy every single moment in a foreign country because time flies! I couldn't recommend it more.
